ATARAXIA , 31/03/2001 Teatro Barbieri, Vercelli (ITALY)
The promotional tour
"Suenos" starts in a quite strange way. I arrive at the
theatre a couple of hours before the concert. As an evidence
of the band fame, someone is already there waiting for the
tickets. For the beginning the hall will be full (even if
the theatre is not exactly an arena...). Strange enough,
there are only darks and some metal freak. Is it possible
that such a worthy group is appreciated only by a certain
group of people? Or maybe the real mental closure in other
places, with all those intellectual-chics not giving heed
to concert organized by a fanzine? Well, they were wrong
because, spite of all the technical difficulties (do two
black-out seem enough?) it has been a wonderful evening.
Ataraxia are now a quartet (that sometime returns a trio,
when it is needed), thank to a new element. Percussionist
and flautist, he has a beautiful voice with a rich timbre
and of noticeable extension. He is able to add up, with
his precise interpretation, new shades to the sound of the
band and is a good complement to Francesca Nicoli's voice.
The show is divided in two parts,: in the fist some pieces
from "Suenos" are played. The impression I got in the review
was confirmed. The songs are better live, I daresay it is
an album made for being performed live, not listened from
the Cd. The two black out I mentioned before do not undermine
the quality of the exhibition. When the light goes out they
supply first with an acoustic passage, then with a two voice
orient-like improvisation. In my opinion it is the best
moment of the first part and gives some hints on possible
future developments, like it was said in the interview...
The second part is all dedicated to "Fantasma Dell'opera",
great album never presented before. The difference with
"Suenos" is clear, in my opinion there are some of theirs
best song. A pity the awful acoustic and amplification,
the soundboxes did not work well enough, distorting the
more acute tones, a real artistic castration for Francesca
and the keyboard player Giovanni Pagliari. A pity also the
audience, cold and little involved, a little too calm for
someone proposing also medieval music. What to say? On the
edge between Middle Ages and experimentation, they really
sound good... In the ned a good evening despite of technical
problems. On the contrary, Ataraxia showed they need no
"help" during the performance of their songs. The valoyur
is real, not virtual. If they come near you do let them
pass unheeded...
