ATARAXIA
Des Paroles Blanches
2003
CD digisingle
Arkadyss AKCD001
21:49
Also issued on 10" vinyl.
Returning once again to watery themes, Ataraxia's
new digisingle/10" is soft, mellow, and romantic, and flows
and washes with beauty and grace. Vittorio Vandelli
plays classical guitar, Francesca Nicoli sings
in English and French, Giovanni Pagliari plays
keyboards, and Francesco Banchini (of Gor)
forsakes his usual role as percussionist for flute and clarinet.
The CD is inspired by the Alabaster Coast
of Normandy, so-called because of its spectacular chalk cliffs,
and the first two tracks, 'Etretat' and 'Veules Les Roses', bear
the names of picturesque towns found along it. These tracks - mainly
classical guitar and vocals - are excellent, but the third track,
'Hovering', is my favourite: sad, nostalgic, and filmic, it would
have all the quality of flowing water even without the sound effects.
Its dramatic symphonic sound and the layered operatic vocals - at
once both grand and intimate, could only come from Ataraxia. Submerge
yourself in the enveloping whiteness. Another masterpiece from the
band that can do no wrong.
