To place the Italian band Ataraxia in a certain genre is an impossible task. They have made music that can be described as goth, medieval, baroque, ethereal and folk music, just to name a few genres. In spite of this diversity, the music still has a unique sound, which makes it instantly recognisable. "Sueños" is the latest album from the Italians. It is divided in three sections, each with a different musical direction.

The first section consists of medieval music. It is made with acoustic instruments and vocals and has a very genuine and authentic feeling to it. We are talking real medieval music here; no big, hairy, armour-clad guys with bagpipes.

The second section is the perfect soundtrack for a fairy tale. The music has a magical touch to it and a serene kind of beauty that really turns on your imagination. The strange, but powerful and beautiful, voice of the vocalist Francesca Nicoli makes the songs even more mystical and unreal. This is my favourite part of the album.

The final section of the album is more classical and bombastic. It has a certain charm to it, even though it is not as good as the middle section. It does, however, give the listener a different impression of the band, which helps prove their musical width.

Ataraxia are a fantastic band. They have made several exquisite albums and "Sueños" is one of them. I think the band has a great ability to create a feeling of magic and something otherworldly. That separates them from a lot of other bands in the same genre.
