Kooper Kain - Turning cities to salt

Before anything the musicians are definitely good at what they do and Kooper Kain is a group of seasoned pros. Culling together various musical styles- Deep, driving drums, swirling electronics and minimal guitars all meld to create a solid platform for the soaring, Bowie-esque vocal style of Kooper Kain. Icy Stars really sets the environment for what you can expect from them. Certainly the vocalist pulls it off and musically there is nothing bad I can say about this album…you can expect to hear a slightly more gothic version of U2 meets Simple Minds perhaps. Although the gothic rock elements are not as frequent. However if Sexgang, Cinema Strange or even Dreadful Shadows is your thing, this will not be for you.
If you like thoughtful, emotional darkwave with minimal guitars, lots of keyboard and fantastically executed vocals – this is for you.
Tracks that stood out for me: Icy Stars, 80 years of dirt, Too far gone and Red Satin Rivers

The Sins - The last one Kills

This band rocks, pure and simple! "Devil Behind the Door" is a lively bastard with great guitar and vocals. Nicely structured. There is no doubt that these are fine musicians and great songwriters as well. I just love "Cold air for Katie". "Into the Chaos" and "Nothing" are slower songs that evoke great emotion, and more traditional gothic rock in nature. "The Walk" reminds me of Fields Of The Nephilim! "Girl in Glass" is a beautiful number that before you know it, has you singing along! "The Ballad of Mr. Thicket" is an odd swirly piece. Each song on "The Last One Kills" is highly unique unto itself, and never sounds like the track that preceded it, nor like the one to follow. Some songs, like "Heaven", are light, and almost folk-like in nature, others, such as "Love In Blood", are grand, bombastic affairs, while still others, such as the showstopper "Walk", are more mid-paced, but filled with an oppressive, cryptic feeling of doom. "Eva"is punky affair that hits you straight between the eyes.
A great and very diverse album with something on it for everyone!

The Sins - The Beginning

Gothic Rock for this generation, influenced by S.O.M, F.o.t.N and The Mission. This is dark rock as it was intended, full epic guitars sounding like they are clawing themselves out of a grave, backed by thunderous drums and walking bass lines. Great structured songs by immensely talented musicians. The Sins have their own musical path combining the familiar sounds of the goth/punk past with their own modern rock influences and ideas. The result is a fascinating blend of genres and sounds from the middle-east-influenced tones of "Ecstasy in Oblivion", to the old school punk feel of "So Many Ways", to the more traditional goth vibe of "Little Girl Lost."
"Angels" is just superb and will surely become a classic track requested at most clubs! "Pain" is absolutely brilliant with great drums, bass and guitars and some keyboard in the background.

Frankenstein - An Ugly Display Of Self Preservation

This CD holds Frankenstein's songs dating all the way back to 1979. Most of which have never been recorded. "An Ugly Display of Self Preservation" is the first full length Frankenstein release ever. Frankenstein relies on good old-fashioned rock and roll i.e. Iggy and The Stooges, Elvis Presley and a twist of the Cramps for flavour. “She Casts No Shadow” is the slowest track on the album personally also one of the best songs on the album along side “Jesus with a big V8” and “Black Lung”. “Flesh Garage” and “LoveCraft” pounds along with great energy. Great lyrics! Great vocals! Great mayhem.
This is a must for all horror punks. Almost reminds me of Screaming Jay Hawkins!

Anguisette – Anguisette

Anguisette is Jyri Glynn. Most notable for his work as the electric violinist and one of the founding members of Seattle goth band Tri-State Killing Spree, Jyri has since continued his dark musical journey with acclaimed deathrock band, The Sins. With his solo premier as Anguisette, Jyri manages to blend just the right amount of symphonic flare with modern electronic overtones creating a moody dark electronica with the electric violin. An ambient background arrangement ,pulsating sequences and synths. Add to this beautiful female vocals and you have just the right amount of emotion and some Eastern flair to create a really beautiful 3-track promo. “Indefinite” is a lovely song, incidentally the only one with vocals.
Here is to hoping to hear more from Anguisette in the future!

Black Ice - Terrible Birds

One of the best Gothic Rock / Deathrock releases I think. Should be a classic already! Black Ice creates a bleak sound filled with post –punk wrath and creepy slow tracks (like “The stillness”) that leaves you wonderfully chilled just asking for more and waiting for the next track with bated breath. And when it comes it is filled with amazingly edgy vocals, scathing and brutal lyrics belting out of angular music, with often staccato drum attacks creating a vicious rhythm chased by a thin jangly guitar and snappy bass like the title track “Terrible Birds”.
Savaged and ravishingly beautiful in an ugly foul way!

Bloodsucking zombies from outer space- … see you at Disneyland

Mixing traditional Misfits calamity with smatterings of ska, shockabilly, goth, blues and assorted electronica. Sounds like a recipe for disaster but no, for BZFOS this actually works. Harsh singing that sounds like a man uttering his last words, catchy choruses, violent guitars and thundering drums inevitably has your foot tapping and looking for a mosh pit, and just when you get too comfortable they will change the music to bring just another mad aspect they can draw on…blessed are the insane!
“Moonlight Sonata” I just love! Filled with so many great tracks “Eaters of the Dead”, “Attack from planet Transilvania” , “C Minor-the suicide waltz” this is a great release and I am sure many more will come!!

Elusive - The Great Silence

After four years Elusive has released its second album, The Great Silence. This Norwegian gothic rock band consists of Tommy Olsson, a previous member of Theatre of Tragedy, on guitars, Jan K. Barkved as vocalist and Kristian Gundersen on guitars. The album starts of with “Ride”, a great up-tempo song that settles the mood for the rest of the album. After “Ride” follows “End of Trail” which is very similar in vein and then follows the somewhat slower songs starting with “Fading Rose”. This sets a darker more emotional undertone then the first few songs, like “the great silence”. The song writing is very strong; all songs surrounded by an epic flair including huge and overwhelming melodies and emotional vocals. After a while though, a lot of the songs are starting to sound alike. The voice is generally quite low and fits the music perfectly, but there are a few songs where he tries to sing a little higher and where you can notice that he can’t really reach the tones but they do add to the emotional value of the song. However this is a good album and well produced and worthy of a listen Very good album with very good songs like ”Ride” , “The great Silence” , “Summer” and “You” .
This will appeal to fans of Scream Silence, Wayne Hussey et al.

Live Not On Evil - Next Time Nail It Shut

This is a hard-edged and rough-hewed sound that is more punk less gothic rock. But they have the Goth edge with atmospherics and desolation. The tracks are strong, powerful, but not relying on simple speed alone, they infuse the atmosphere with a simpler brooding and lots of nightmare. Packed with tight guitar riffs, relentless drum attack and great bass thrown together with just the right blend of moodiness and aggression.“Shooting Stars” and “Ghost in the woods” are excellent, slightly slower with almost desolate vocals and haunting guitar work. Brilliant and moody. “All is Vanity”, however, picks up the pace, a simple, no-nonsense straight up heavy guitar Deathrock track.
It is almost difficult to pick out what I think are the best or my favourite tracks as this whole album is just so damn good!

Nim Vind- Fashion Of Fear

Nim Vind- Fashion Of Fear Rife with ghoulish pop-punk songs about skulking in the shadows Fashion of Fear gives you what you expect: Songs that are very well structured, driving drums and great guitar riffs that split skulls. Then the voice comes and while you think it might remind you of someone else, it does not matter because it works, it sounds great and all you want to do is join the mayhem. And let’s give credit where due – he does have a great crooning voice! This is horror-punk with some gothic elements from the disco beat and jangling strings of “Astronomicon” which will rattle bones on dance floors instead of in circle pits, and the acoustic guitar ballad “The Bitter End” which is a great emotional track. Though I cannot clear the image of a cowboy riding of in a red sunset when this starts!
Standout tracks are "Like a Guilloteen", "The Fashion of Fear”, & "Into the Sphere We Go" and the great guitar of “Outsiders”All in all a great album and well worth it!

The Mysterious Deadbeats - songs to die for (promo)

Guess you could call their music DEATHROCK as there’s a bit of Punk/Metal and Goth going on in what they do, well actually quite a lot of it!With influences like 45 Grave, The Misfits, Adam and the Ants,The Cramps, The Damned, Black Sabbath,Sisters of Mercy you almost know (or not) what to expect.“Gothic Chic” is a great tongue in cheek track with clear Misfits influences, fast and furious. “Needles” I think is a probably the strongest song with brilliant guitar work, driving drums and then a voice that brings it all just perfectly together. ”Children Shouldn’t play with dead things” is another fast and aggressive song followed by a slower paced “The last laugh” with Gothic undertones and all in all a great structure. “Breakdown” returns to punk - aggressive and furious!
I really hope these guys get to release a full album, as I am sure it will be, if nothing else, interesting!

Crimson Ghosts – Leaving the tomb

German band The Crimson Ghosts is fast paced horror punk rock with slabs of metallic guitar driving it to death. The Misfits influences is very prominent and leaves it’s mark all over the album but the Crimson Ghost have resurrected the corpse of the Misfits and gored it up and what you get is the Misfits' American Psycho era music but with better chops - punky, for sure, but with an obvious thrash metal edginess. Brilliant lyrics, pulled off by vocalist Vlad with an energy and passion that is second to none. ”Pre mortem Ecstasy”, “Leaving the Tomb”, “Death from Above” rocks so hard it is almost like being hit by a truck from the front. The drums are thunderous and relentless with screeching powerful guitars adding to the dementia.
Recommended for horror punk fans!

Forbidden Dimension – a coffin full of crows

Forbidden Dimension – a coffin full of crows A reissue of classic horror-rock band Forbidden Dimensions. Featuring such songs as "Dial 'M' For Monster", "Ghosts Run Wild", "Tomorrow I Will Kill You", plus a bunch more. Also included is the first Forbidden Dimension 45 "Into the Forbidden Dimension". While the guitars are the driving force in this band, you end up wishing you could hear the drums a bit more as it is completely lost. The vocals at times also sound like they were recorded under water. However saying this tracks that really stood out were “Invisible Dimension”, and “A Coffin Named Desire”, perhaps because the tempo suddenly shifts and there are no under water effects on the vocals and they end up being very good songs. Also “Pickled Punks” is a great track with good guitar riffs.
Think Screaming Lord Sutch for this generation, crossed with Link Wray.

Popoi Sdioh – ST

Ex-The Nomads Land and ex-Land of Passion, now Popoi Sdioh changed their name in 2001 after seven demo tapes and one CD as Land of Passion which to this day remains one of my favourite albums. The now four piece draws inspiration from post-punk, dark and post-rock. Cut-throat vocals, all the distortions, the frenetic drumming and what they call audiocrashtests (dirty samples or other weird noises that help build suspense) reminds you of many of the bands of the like Bauhaus, Crass, Echo And The Bunnymen, Electric Hellfire Club, Scratch Acid, Thrill Kill Kult, Christian Death, PsychicTV, Front 242, The Birthday Party, Alien Sex Fiend, Aphex Twin, Clock DVA but they are not just another throwback band to the eighties. Blending in sporadic electronics, experiments with noises and other stuff makes them stand out of the crowd and still suitable and innovative especially at this time where to may bands only try and emulate the past instead of growing from the past. This is a band that creates a balance between the '80es and the new millennium!
This CD is incredible. It almost wants to be entirely familiar yet it is refreshingly new. “Braa”, “Crick in the head”, “Great god Pan”, ”Psychogame“ and “Freaks” are outstanding tracks!

Black Atmosphere – Descending Faith

"Promising Roses" starts with despair and one feels the sense of desolation as it is dished up on thick, well-sprung bass. The vocals grow in clarity and power as the song starts to flail with a stirring, powerful chorus. Descending into a spiral of madness and passion. ‘Embrace’ has some great guitar work and lots of gloomy, spirited space and excellent singing. ‘Seeking Sanctity’ starts with an almost innocent sounding voice, introducing the song but is soon joined by more manic voices very soon. Good guitar work and deep bass creating great atmospheres! The title track has great deep bass with guitar friction, keyboard moments and brilliant, bickering vocals.
This is definitely recommended and hopefully a new album is on the cards soon!

Lost Sounds - Black Wave

The Lost Sounds is about aggression, an aggression that is totally timeless, and it's hard to make aggression timeless. You will be introduced to the sounds of the lost sounds not easily classifiable – sometimes fronted by male agony and aggressions at other by female voice equally aggressive. In all cases the music is brilliant varying from distorted guitars breaking into clear acoustics with some electronic noises in the background, relentless drumming and wonderful bass lines.“Reasons to Kill”, “I’m not a machine”, “Don’t Turn Around” has got female vocals and almost wants to remind us of an Xmal Deutchland or even Malaria but with a harder punk edge. “Plastic Skin”, “Do you wanna kill me”, “Die Pax”, “Walk in Line” features the male vocalist with great screaming vocals and excellent guitar and constant drum attack!
“Reasons to Kill”, “I’m not a machine”, “I see everything” really stood out for me and probably worth the buy just for them.

The Cascades - Corrosive Mind Cage

From far Bavaria come the Cascades and their second release. Similar to Scream Silence, Dreadful Shadows comes this amazing album, which settles itself nicely between your ears. A deep voice lulls us over with a passionate and emotional execution backed with driving guitars and drums. Well-structured songs that are beautifully executed.
“Page One” and “Hexen Einmaleins” are really great tracks and if you like bands like the early more gothic 69 Eyes, Sisters of Mercy and Dreadful Shadows… then this one is for you.

Gothik Radio
Hellbats - Dark 'n' Mighty

Very heavy guitars, almost metal one could consider, with psychobilly rock and this would make the strangest marriage. Yet this is it. Guitar solo’s galore and thrashing drums and this reminds you of another Misfits band. There really is no one particular song that stands out, as they all seem to blend into one long song.
Not my thing really but try it if you feel like it.

Katzenjammer Kabarett - Katzenjammer Kabarett (Promo)

As synths tinkle like a music box, those creepy damn ones, like a fairy tale, like a grand introduction to nightmare about to begin. You almost feel like swooning, almost and then suddenly guitars and drums kick you in the face with the type of vocals that remind you immediately of Kas Product as “Katzenjammer Kids” start. Powerful stuff this! Followed by the piano-introduced “Gemini Girly Song”. Great! Remarkable tracks are also “Eve At The Mansion” with its very Deathrock inspired drums but interesting breaks and could remind one of Cinema Strange at times. "Broken Dolls" is their most conventional song as it seeps and sulks with a sense of truculent aggression. How stylish this band is, how unusual, how entrancing!
This is Cabaret meets Deathrock meets great story telling in a sleazy smoke filled lounge! This is a true representative of the new generation, because the future lies with imagination not adherence to known formulae.

Swann Danger - Swann Danger

Swann Danger - Swann Danger This is the first CD EP by Swann Danger with 5 songs all plodding in tempo, but restless in melody. They offer a good range of intimidating and heavy sounds. This is dark and brooding stuff, which at times reminds me of a darker Siouxsie and the Banshees. “Motion To Bliss” really sets the mood for what to expect on this. A bit of variation would not go a miss and perhaps a change of tempo, perhaps some faster tracks just to break an almost monotonous beat.
However saying that I really like this and hope they release an album soon!

Il Giardino Violetto – Danse Macabre

Typically Italian Goth, but that is a good thing. However this reminds you of Madre del Visio with female vocals at times with the same intensity and insanity. For some reason The Dead Relatives and Spiritual Bats come to mind listening to this as well…. And there is nothing wrong with that! The second track “Il Giardino Violetto" is pretty much what to expect from the band, dirge like guitars, heavy bass and the howling vocals of the singer Serena that reminds one of some kind of invocation. We feel in it a certain emotion (a certain anxiety for sure); the male vocals hidden behind give a sort of mystic form to this track. Eerie, mental stuff this. "Waiting (Red Death)" has perhaps a more traditional drum beat, nice guitar and vocals that fit perfectly. Catchy. Bass and drums and minimal guitars and the voice of Serena drive “L.S.D.” a Very nice track indeed. However the remix features the male voice and is more orientated for dance floors. "Litanie a Satana" returns to same idea as the second track. Lovely indeed! Again this is typical italian gothic-rock, obscure and underground but still so familiar.
Brilliant and highly recommended!

Gothik Radio
Sixteens – Fendi

From the same US scene as Vanishing, The Phantom Limbs, Black Ice and Swann Danger comes Sixteens. Haunting melody lines and screamed vocals leave no doubt about the gothic influences in the sound of Sixteens. I am reminded at times of Kas Product but not with the same quality of the voice. "Figurative Character" is quite a good track, simple bass and drum, not challenging in the least but probably quite danceable.
Overall, the Sixteens churn out four monotonous, disco thriller songs that leave you in a redundant trance.

Gothik Radio
The Weegs - Meat The Weegs

Dark post-punk music fused with electronics. Raw guitar sounds and screamed vocals are combined with electronic rhythms and melodies. The songs are mostly rather fast, even neurotic and nervous at times. When the band takes a little step back they come up with crazy disco punk music. Especially ”Pink elephant walk” and “M.I.A” are great tracks. Somewhat like The Phantom Limbs and The Au Pairs mixed and some added electronics on top of that.
The Weegs inhabit an eerie space at the carnival next to the freak show stand.

Gothik Radio
The Skabs - Aged To Perfection

Honestly I am not much for all the electronica these days. Lull me with guitars I beg. Here is yet another band using the electronic card and if it was not for the voice of the vocalist it would have gone to the bin immediately.Again fusing all this with Deathrock and this in itself I find amusing as I can not see how the aggression and energy of the guitar can be replaced by synths and sound fonts and god knows what.Nothing really grabbed me about this band.
Maybe two or three songs worth a mention are “The Pauper's Dance”, “X” and “New Jack Shit”

Gothik Radio
Zorch Factor - One last shower in the dirt

This is everything and all things eighties, dark throbbing bass lines with crystal guitars and suitably deep, dark vocals that hark back to the days of The Batcave. There are even hints of post punk and psychobilly to keep it upbeat and interesting. Unfortunately the recording is a bit thin but provided they do a proper recording this will be more then just good…likely it will be great! “Wish/Hate” and “Sick Priest” with its hints of psychobilly, stood out for me as really good songs.
Again the only negative thing is the production that makes listening to this difficult at times, but the music one cannot fault.

Gothik Radio
Burning Image - 1983-1987

Fusing the UK Batcave sound with SoCal's '80s-era death rock gives birth to release of Burning Image. This compilation includes the band's impossible-to-find single "The Final Conflict" b/w "Burning Image", along with a few other unreleased demos and a few tracks recorded in 2003. While I found it hard to get into the music from the first listen or to be captured by it, which I really wanted to be, it was not until the third or fourth listen that “The Lower Walks” actually started growing on me.The last three tracks "Gargoyles", "Anytime, Anywhere" and "Temptation". Were recently recorded so have much better sound quality picking up right where they left off, delivering a spooky smattering of twisted goth and animated punk.
I am not sure about this, but try it and see for yourself.

Gothik Radio
New Math - Wake The Dead

Another "hard-to-find" band and a great fine one too. This album is basically "They Walk Among Us" (released back in 1982) together with another New Math album called "Gardens" on one CD! Mostly New Wave, with lots of Post-Punk with Keyboards and a generous touch of Gothic-Rock. Imagine PIL, Kommunity FK, Wall Of Voodoo, Gary Numan, a little bit of Punk and some Gothic-Rock moments and you get New Math. It is difficult to actually pick out favourites from this but “They walk among you”, “Garden Of Delight”, “Two Tongues” are tracks that immediately stand out! “Invocation”, is good
If you can get this, buy it you will never regret it!

Dog Detachment – The Last Laugh

Not much seems to be known about the South African gothic scene internationally, however, there is a thriving hard core scene there which has delivered many great bands, but unfortunately they never got the recognition they deserved.
Dog Detachment is one,if not THE best moment in South African music history. Personally Dog Detachment is one of my all time favourite bands. Timeless. The original band formed early 1980 and their first gig was in March of that year at the GR Bozolli club on the Wits University campus. Imagine a more gothic sounding New Model Army that married the early Cure influenced by The Sex Pistols, Wild Youth, The Clash, The Ramones, Cockney Rejects, and The Dead Boys & later on Echo & the Bunnymen. They did everything right - and yes I am biased and I cannot help it. All the tracks from the first album “The Last Laugh” is just superb. Unfortunately this album is not available anymore however RetroFresh in South Aftica has a released a "best of" called "best kept secret" on disk which has all but two of tracks on this album. It is a great job that this has been released on disk now without the crack and pop of the vinyl. The tracks are not chronological which means you can swing from the angry, angst-filled punk of tracks from 'The Last Laugh' to the darker, more brooding songs from 'Fathoms of Fire' to the more world wise and prophetic offerings from 'Barriers' then back to the spiky punk of the single 'Third World War'. Despite this, you are always treated to hard rocking, hard hitting but, and this is the bit that set them apart from the others, always melodic tunes.
This is an absolute must!

Geneviéve Pasquier – Soap bubble factory

Previously a member of the legendary, now defunct, german industrial project thorofon, Geneviéve Pasquier released her first work as a solo artist in 2003.The result was a mix of electronic/post-industrial music and 80s-minimal-electro with a frigid but soulful voice. "Soap bubble factory" is her first album on cd - her previous efforts were vinyl only. This is a pretty strong album with some amazing tracks exploring dark, electronic soundscapes, sensuous industrial tunes and driving retro-electro-songs..
Remember and Disappointed expectations are definately my favourite tracks on the album. The vocals are perfectly balanced between being sung and spoken (in english and french) - and there's even enough space left for a little poem! At times I am reminded of a "heavenly voices" artist with minimal electro/ambient soundscapes (Remember) and others reminded of Siouxsie with the same retro industrial soundscape(Disappointed expectations). There are certain similarities to mrs. arafna / november növelet .
For those that are into the minimal electro and retro electro sounds this is a must.
NFD – Light my way

An advance promo copy of the ne NFD album soon to be released Dead Pool Rising. This is very promising indeed. And if this is anything to go by the new album is going to be brilliant.Light my way is an incredibly good track and immediately reminds us of Nephilim. But in this case it is done so well , and we know they consist of some of the FotN memebers so it is ok. Driving guitars , thundering drums and the vocals that tie all of this together to create an incredibly powerful song!
As I said the new album looks to be very promising and if it maintains the quality of the promo here , it is bound to be one of the gothik rock albums of the year.

Gothik Radio
Canaan - The Unsaid Words

"The Unsaid Words" begins with the introductory track "The Wrong Side Of Things" a swelling dark ambience and ritualistic atmosphere. Waves of grey sound disgorging out of darkness like shadows scrambling from the light. Cold slabs of dark ambience are accented by minimal electronic effects and occasional metallic accents.
The second track, and one of my favourites "This World Is Mine" reminds me a little of the Hall of Souls and is a very dark track indeed with great guitar and drums and very emotional vocals. "In A Never Fading Illusion" we are given epic dark rock with guitar, bass, keyboards and drums unifying in a powerful and epic ballad of despair and self reflection.
Mostly with this album we are subjected to a sad and desolate soundscape. Male vocals that breach the tentative music with introspective lyrics sung with casual sensuality

Gothik Radio
This Empty Flow - The Album

This is a remastered reissue of "Magenta skycode" (1996) plus a bonus cd of rare material. Feuturing ex-members of Thergothon, a finnish gothic-doom band. However this is NOTHING like doom or metal but have more in common with The Cure - Disintegration and CocteueTwins with a darker edge.
The music is quite dreamy and melancholic within an epic framework, with nice clean vocals and a sound which is likely to appeal to fans of Beyond Dawn, "Eternity" by Anathema, and such. The album is primarily driven by reverb and delay soaked clean guitars, keyboards, drums and an occasional sample here and there."Useless" is certainly a great track but "Distress" and "(But I am) Still" steal the album for me. You can definitely hear the Cure influence.
There is a genuine sorrowful emotion that transcends the ALBUM.

The Weegs - The Million Sounds Of Black

The Weegs return with a second full length record of tripped out distorto-skronk that just edges on blatant cacophony but some how manages to make sense and at the same time be a damn fine work.
Latching onto early American punk/ post-punk and California "no wave" , they drag themselves kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Welcome the disjointedly pulsing rhythm throbs along with hypnotic bursts of feedback and noise that would do Arto Lindsay proud. This art-damaged racket is still uncannily musical, like some freak-beat psych band gone horribly wrong.
Favourite tracks include Sixty-Five MPH, Rations and Daphid Which features some Rozz inspired vocals.
Superb

Gothik Radio
Clan of Xymox - Breaking Point

At first listen I was almost disappointed with this release, thinking fondly back to Medusa and even hidden faces , but upon subsequent listens something started to grow on me...
Perhaps the variety of sounds, tempos and styles on the CD makes it a truly remarkable album. And of course there is the typical Xymox sound with the emotional charged voice of Ronny Moorings; successfully creating new directions within a sound that remains typical, as we are used to from Clan of Xymox.
'Be my friend' sticks into your head after you heard it just once. The thrill of passion and mystery is in 'She's dangerous', nostalgia in 'Eternally' and it's almost like you watch a movie while you listen to 'Pandora's box', the soundtrack to a passionate play.
As we're used to from Clan of Xymox the album shows a perfect mix between electronics and guitars with truly great vocals. The lyrics are expressive. For those who like the sound of Clan of Xymox, this release is a must have; it's one of the best albums, which shows that it's possible to express a kind of art that's familiar while it is original too.

Frustration - Full Of Sorrow

Wow!Absolutely blown away by this. This is incredible stuff.
Immediatly "Blind" and "Your Body" jumped out at me.Starting off with some keyboards followed by drums but very soon the powerful guitars kick in and it all just hits you right between the eyes!Leaving you gasping for more.
Powerful, potent and brutal post-punk. Kind of like WARSAW meet WIRE meet the FALL just to give you an idea of what to expect. Sometimes the vocals remind me of Spiral of Silence and Joy Division...only sometimes as this vocalist has so much pent up frustration and knows just how to let it loose. Theirs is an explosive cocktail with all the tension of retained violence and madness thundered through with agitated spasmodic drums and degenerate keyboards that will leave your head aching.
The only pity about this is that it is only 5 songs (6 including a live song) and believe me when it finishes you WILL want to only play it again.

Gothik Radio
Artica - Plastic Terror

A great gothik rock album this.Powerful guitars, thunderous drums and a very talented vocalist with an incredible voice
Clearly they have been doing this for some time, almost 17 years or so but you can tell. The talent in this band is over flowing and this vocalist kicks ass! Where he mostly sets a mood with a deep vocal rendition ,with a certain Mission influence and you just want to become used to it he delivers Aggressione and you are given a taste just what he is capable of. At times I am reminded of Madre del Vizio but that is really only when they sing in Italian and is quite likely due to the language.Blending keyboards in with some mournful dirge guiatrs like on I dont Fit and then the thunderous compositions of Plastic Terror and Aggressione leaves you knowing you have listened to something special.
However there are definate more metal influences on this record especially the first two tracks which has a deeper growl voice at times and really heavy guitar riffs. But this is not necassarily a bad thing. Overall the strongest tracks for me are
Plastics Terror,Ocean,Engel,Aggressione,I dont Fit and Roma Brucia

Siiiii - Ancient

Utterly unbelievable.
Not sure what else I can write and how much praise one person can give to an artist before it becomes pathetic, but Siiiii certainly deserves all the credit they are given. This is so good and I am amazed that they never got a record deal but I guess we are fortunate enough now that we have this offering from them.
Split reminds me of The Dead Relatives but only so much better.Very dark and brooding indeed.Conception has a thin light minimalistic guitar hanging over it while the voice digests on its own agony beautifully. This mood is carried on in Overgrown Eyes and contains the same brooding dark and gloomy quality as Split.
Statue is another fine example of incredible brooding and gloomy gothik rock.Thin guitar carried by a stunning nostalgic bass line. And the vocals carry you into another world where you are lost and surrounded by nothing but this song...this music...this voice that seems to take you further and further into a deeper darker hole. Rictus opens with drums to shock you out of the revelry of Statue releasing a bolt of energy carried by a a thick bass. This is continued in the incredible Is Still Then, they deliver another blow to your front teeth, but one that is quite pleasing in the sleazy sounding Fixing.Over completes the album perfectly and you are left astonished that this has not become a legendary album yet..but give it a few days!

Camp Z - Camp Z

The new offering from Manu (from Zorch Factor) is one that embraces the new technology while holding fast to the traditional batcave sound.
"Credo fk",an almost industrialized composition introduces us to the new Camp Z disk. With sampled voice in the background and electronics that create a hypnotic effect this short song sets the mood for the next track. "Whats this world" is a catchy number with some deeper vocals reminiscent of early industrial acts. A very nice guitar backs this song with again some more electronic sounds fluttering in out of the track. It seems a distance away from the first Zorch release but that is what is so great about this..the versatility and the fact that it will not be pigeon holed. "Unforgiven" has a heavier guitar sound and the same style of vocals as the previous track but effectively creating a darker atmosphere.Dirge guitar sounds add to this desolate atmosphere. "W.hell Come (to the camp)" is returning to the batcave sound of Zorch Factor with the added electronic noise croaks that jumps at you through out the song. The voice now is clear and carries a definate anguish. "The Right to" is the longest track on the album and features the guitar setting a mood for what is to come.Again this intro touches on the hypnotic while the drums gradually start building up waiting for the clear voice to deliver us its message. The whole pace kicks up a pace a bit more then halway through and the vocals return to the darker quality of earlier tracks. "(Alice) in trance" is just strange, I am very much reminded of Alien Skull Paint but using guitars. A kind of Minimal Eletronic with guitars. This is actually very nice."L'eveil" is a return to the intro track with industrial soundscapes."Chat Rat" starts with a great bass and drums and a guitar lingering in the background and gradually coming forward.I really like this track.A single note hangs over the entire verse creating a sense of anticipation. "The Ghost Boat" starts with drums and soon the accoustic guitars enter this and a clear voice serenades us. And this track is just great! Finally "D.hell.usion" superbly closes a very interesting and enjoyable disk which reminds me of a marriage between batcave, industrial and minimal electro. Definately recommended!

The Other - We are who we eat

Straight from FiendForce comes the mighty and very powerful new "The Other - We are who we eat" album. Normally it is quite an onerous task to write a review about a horrorpunk band as mostly it will be about how much the same it is to the Misfits, how the vocals are only a Glen Danzig rip off.So usually rather despondant at best. However with the Other you are pleasantly surprised that when one listens to it, you are confronted with a wall of sound that speaks of sleek production and 14 tracks ( oh yes and do not forget the hidden one) that hammer themselves into your skull relentlessly.
The vocals have gone so far beyond what ever could be in reference to Glen Danzig, and all in all this band has gone so far beyond their first release that they have now gone and carved a very difinitive sound for themselves.
There isn't a weak track on this cd.From the word go the assualt starts and never let's up for even a breather. What is great though is the dynamics of the songs."In the Dead of Night" is kick ass which I personally count as one of my favourites. But that is not all, oh no, "Lover's Lane" and "Menage A Mort" are equally splendid tracks, the latter has a steady Jazz/Swing beat in Usher serenades (or not) us with his demented lyrics. "Menage A Mort" is greats on every level. Musicall it is a Blues-based track but one that is explosive and powerful.
Definatley recommended for horropunks!!

Collapsing New People - Collapsing New World

12 songs of politically charged post-punk/new wave is what you get when listening to Collapsing New World. Very well written and produced songs with rather memorable melodies snaking through each track. The vocals sometime male, sometime female is great. While listening to collapse collide capitulate I am reminded of Drown for Resurrection with an 80's slant. This track is great with beautiful arpeggios and a great chorus.
Blank Generation is just brilliant, catchy and memorable and you will find yourself repeating those two words for quite some time after the song has finished!Great female vocals. A danceable track composed of rhythmic drum machine and synth bass substructure accented by echoing, spacious processed sound, synths, and the mentioned great female vocals, concluding with a processed woodwind finale.
off the track increases the tempo a little bit and proceeds to dabble in the gothik rock regions with the guitar and a fine moody atmosphere. This is a great release, at times a little too 80's pop influenced, but then again we were all young once so it is a pleasurable itch to a decade now gone.
A great album that's will please fans of retro new wave and electronic-infused post-punk.

Moonrise - End Of Grace

Moonrise, following in the vein of bands suchs as Scream Silence, certainly know how to deliver. Recreating a sound that stands out against the usual plates they commit themselves to essentially a Gothic rock sound with a Wave-ish undertone.
Based on the foundation of demanding bass runs and a solid Drum section, the rhythmic leaves nothing to be desired.Interweaved into this a tapestry of sound, comes the some times melodic guitars, other times just relentless energy and atmospheric key boards to create the perfect symbiosis for a sense of melancholy and power.
At last comes the vocals that understand almost perfectly how to explore the emotional spectrum both in unusual melodies and desperate cries.
Traum Des Mondes starts with a sombre keyboard.Melancholy spills from the mouth of the vocalist. A guitar screeching disparately in the back ground. And soon enough the whole menagerie explodes in a beautiful emotional chorus. When I see you is a more traditional forward gothik rock number and reminds one of the Cascades or Scream Silence.
Very good EP this and well worth getting.

Bohemien - La Parata del Circo

After the fantastic release of 'Danze Pagane' , Bohemien returns with this EP that essentially just continues where the previous one has left off.Filled with the same high quality gothik rock of the previous album. Displaying the same remarkable creativity and firmness in sound many of us were so taken by.
This EP has four tracks of classic gothik rock in the vein as say Rozz and of course Itialian gods Madre Del Vizio etc. but still Bohemien offers us something refreshingly new.Cutting guitars and a solid rhythm section, with the amazing keyboard layers creates a sound that threatens to verge atmospherically on the Horrific.
The organ on the title track is superb. "Anemia" is a great song, with keyboards that do not overpower, pounding percussion, and female backup vocals. "Nell'ora Dell'enigma" comes in with more spooky organ, and then urgent vocals with great guitar bridges. "Specchio" is another fine track with the bass holding everything together and utterly edgy guitar.
Also included are two more versions of 'Anemia", one in English and a remix. I can't wait to hear more from Bohemien and for these veterans of the goth scene to release the next full release.
Bound to please almost everyone that is enjoys gothik rock and deathrock.
Bohemien is highly recommended!

Le Vene Di Lucretia- Le Vene Di Lucretia

A fascinating name but fortunately this is not the only fascinating aspect of this very talented band. In similiar vein the lable mates Il Giardino Violetto this release is a combination atmospheric, frenzied, manic and an ever so slightly insane mixture of everything one would hope to expect of gothik music and post punk.
Through out the album one is exposed to an orchestrated and expressive music, with guitars that exsquisitely evoke moments similiar to "Only Theatre of Pain" with out falling into the trap of being merely Christian Death clones.
A solid rhythmic foundation that brings to light hatred, love and the dead.Lyrics influenced by the decadent and burial literature reminds one of 19th century gothic.
Harem is a powerful track with great melodic guitars and a pounding rhythm.Vocally reminded again of Madre del Vizio in the best possible way.Gothik rock that is certainly Euorpean in sound with a dark edge.
La Vestizione Starts of with powerful guitars and drums, beating one into a rhythmic chasm. With eery guitars and keyboards enforcing the spooky atmosphere.Emotional vocals lament us in all that is unholy with edge of aggression.
Madre Della Veglia - Wow this track is just incredible!Starting of with bells it emmediatly sets an atmosphere. The almost whisperings leading us deeper and deeper into a darkness. When suddenly it erupts into a frenzy of guitars and drums
This band is spectacular.
Definately highly recommended!!

Other Voices - Anatomy of a Pain

What is it with In the Night Time as a label? They keep on releasing these bands that are certainly all at the top of the gothik music scene.
Or rather should be! Word of advice - if they release it, just buy it!
Anyway, Other Voices is another Italian band that enivitably will be a delight to any respectable old and new rock waver. For the people who like The Cure, AATT, The Names, and some French cold wave acts which seem to be the most correct comparisons for this excellent band!
Certain records snuggle into you quite similiar to a drill that snuggles into an eyesocket, not expecting it but once there it stays. Perfectly comfortable with a slight sense of unease, well this album is one of those! Not assualted by noise or screeching guitars nor the ethereal fallacies filling a room like a pungent odour.
Other Voices offer a slender sound with just enough to grab hold off with out loosing it altogether. Sung in English you are presented with a promise that is smartly buoyant and keeps your interest. Well's Anomalies has a stricter feel then the other tracks on the album with vocals that almost seem ready to go off on one exploration of it's own but instead sneaks around the icy guitar and stays there moodily untill slipping quietly into a more gradual incline.
…But A Chill Runs Along Your Spine… is quite the little Goth track. With stronger drums, the flickering guitar and bass all sneaking along darkly untill a lighter spirit enters the song and the floatiness encourages the guitar to a bit more muscle which in turn urges bolder vocals through.
This is a great album of cold “cold wave”...dramatic coldness…Coldly Recommended!

Thelema - Tantra

Thelema forms a part of Italian gothik/post punk history, as one of many Italian bands that never released an album or even a single but none the less contributed to many compilations. Considered to be part of the so called magical music scene due to the lyrical content and context of their music. It is important to note they never used this a a publicity stunt. But the members were in fact deeply involved in magic from a personal perspective.
Tantra, is a great album with mid tempo songs scattered with flute inserts and a dark vein that is unique to them. Merging the primitive post punk urge with a 70's Velvet Underground they introduced keyboards, a flute and a loud bass guitar to retain the tribal effect.
J.C.S (A Pagan Ritual) starts with bass guitar fluttering and a burst of drums accompanied with the guitars that keep us hooked with its melody. One can hear the tribal motif clearly.Building into the crescendo that is the chorus. This is a lively and great song!
Samekh starts of with a strong basss and drums , again the tribal motif, and a screeching guitar that suddenly gives way to the voice.Wrapping you into the atmosphere of this song so completely.
Sweet submission-This comes at a slower pace and a clear guitar that starts it off. This is almost more emotional compared to the other more "magical" in nature. However this is a beautiful track.
Really, you can't miss out this one!

Solemn Novena - As Darkness Falls..

Solemn Novena does an incredible job with this release, for a fairly new band to produce this quality is exceptional. From the first listen I was completely taken by it.Reminded in parts of Judith and at times some early Nosferatu and continuesly 100% pure gothik rock!
As Darkness falls is the beginning for them and I am sure a start to greater things.I would be disappointed if not. They seem to have it all here.Dirge guitars that snake through a solid rhythm section.A pounding and thunderous drum section and the bass that adds all the necessary undertones needed for a magnificent breeding pot of glorious music.
As Darkess Falls is the opeing track and immediately sweeps you away with with great vocals and very melodic instrumentation. The beautiful guitar sweeping around the solid pounding of the drums while vocals flirt with a solemn yet powerful delivery. The chorus is attended by the beautiful female vocals and journeys along for the rest of the song.
Twilight follows in the footsteps of the first track and by now you have a clear idea of what to expect from these very talented individuals. The sweeping guitar melodies backed with the infallible rhtythm section. The male voice this time accompanied by the female voice playing aginst each other. Truly superb!

Too many highlights to name on this compilation with Little Nemo, Wallenberg's fantastic 'The Swell', Joy Disaster, Noctule Sorix, Psychotique?, Jacquy Bitch too name but a few.
This is a must have in anyone's collection that is serious about Goth / Post Punk!

No Tears - Borderline

With a history like theirs, considering the members of the band, I am not surprised at the quality and prowess of this band! They know what they're doing!
What they call cold wave, on the lighter side of rock, and by its inquisitive nature it becomes easily accessible to Goth ears.
'Void' is a testament that this is very pertinant to Goths as a whole, with keyboards and guitar draping themselves over the fuller bass shades. Very thoughtful and a journey into a new darkness.
'Night Effect' is a great catchy track that gives way to Sadness as it lets itself in weaving a new tapestry sometimes reminiscent of The Cassandra Complex.
'Prisoner' is a rather restless one , gripping with a pained vocal delivery. 'Mauvaise Farce' has a great bass and guitar; a wonderfully crafty song.
A superb release and highly recommended!

Screaming for Emily - Scriptures / Malice

Screaming for Emily is:
Philip Sciortino, Jr.- Vocals, Synths, Piano
Lance Redaelli- Drums and Percussion
Steven Baillie- Synthesizers
A moody, atmospheric and original band with great rhythms and great melodies formed in 1986; Scriptures is a classic goth EP.
With amazing tracks like The Love,Too Late for Prayer,Another Girl,... well bascially the whole EP is pretty damn great!

Now 20 years later they return with Malice and although synthpop is not my cup of tea, I actually was pleasantly surprised by how good this was.
DEITY has a a wonderful rhythm with real drums and percussion blended with synthetic strings and deep, sultry vocals. Truly outstanding! She's Risen,Intent and A Dry Year are all really good tracks that had me very soon , in some form or the other, tapping along.
The songwriting is fairly simple and straight to the point. With charismatic vocal deliveries. As a whole a solid album with a vintage blend of the 80's.At time energetic , at others lush and atmospheric.

Moldig - Moldig

From Italy comes this band of two impassioned musicians delivering us with a slice of cold-wave / post punk that is of the highest quality.
Where else but Italy, often I have wondered what it is about Italians?Listening to their bands - the quality of music they produce is outstanding. But also they have delivered some of the more obscure gems in this scene like the Dead Relatives etc.
The Treachery starts of this demo giving us the genral tone of things to come. Solid drums and a thin squeaking guitar all add to carry the serious, composed and at once beautiful voice of Giuditta.
An incredibly mature song for such a young band. This is not an attempt to do something good. They have done it!
A Game delivers more of the same post-punk of The Treachery.
Finally in 20 Seconds we hear a change of direction, something more cold wave creeps towards us in this track, and something of the Cure perhaps?
In conclusion:A great solid demo from a very talented band!I can not wait for their album which I am sure will be spectacular!

Wallenberg - Sea of Sins

This is no new band suddenly on the shores of gothik rock. No, these guys were there back in the 80's and now more then two decades later they return. Offering to us more of the same quality gothik rock we grew up with, well most of us.Traces of Christian Death and Virgin Prunes is evident on this release. Even some traces of the Cure linger here and there.
Having been one of the most important bands in the French cold - wave scene between 1984 and 1988 , they had countless live shows and concerts supporting Play Dead,Jad Wio, Neva and many more!
Sea of Sins starts with solid drums, pounding a good rhythm followed soon by a wonderful guitar riff and lastly coming to full maturity when the bass drops in. At first the voice seems a little out of place, not quite knowing where to be placed, but it is exactly this not quite belonging that makes it so appealing. And you soon get used to it. I actually think it adds to the emotional value of the song.Adding to it a dimension of desperation, a dimension of madness and utter abandonement for the conventional one so often heard with the Virgin Prunes.
But is a slightly slower track, and now that our ears have become used to the voice, we can actually appreciate how truly good these guys are. The music is beatifully written, dripping with atmosphere, thin guitars , pounding drums and very convincing vocals.
Hypnotic (Or MDP) takes us straight into the Batcave.Nestling there all smugly with a great low end bass and drums.Dirge and thin guitars fluttering about. The vocals on this track is very good.I can hear some Jacquy Bitch influence in the high vocals. Not surprisingly one can quickly guess why they were so popular in the 80's.
Welcome Home and Definitely (Too Much Class For This Neigbourhood) are more great songs with good solid drums and very nice accoustic guitars. Delivering consistantly good tracks. Why is another highlight on this disk. But by now you should know what to expect and this track does not dissappoint.
All in all a great release, once you get used to the strange sounding voice, you discover how good the music is.And why these are guys were so important in the French scene.

De Volanges - J090745.0+24507 [the outcast]

From Belguim comes a moody and at times rather aggressive but always original album, featuring great rhythms and melodies and some introspective sounding vocals. One thing that becomes very clear is that after each listen, this album as a whole becomes better and better.
Individual tracks start shining through with their own unique brilliance. The Distance starts of this album with some incredibly melancholic sounding accoustic guitar, setting the atmosphere for this song, drums come kicking in partnered with a driving bass guitar. Finally comes the vocals blending with the atmosphere perfectly. This is a wonderful song that really only gets better after each listen.
Spacewalk diverts from the first track with a more up tempo beat which essentially sets the mood for what follows in
Sweet times Burn with its more aggressive guitars and voices.Starting off with just the drums and some electronic noise thingy.
The voice starts its rendition after a short while the guitar, obtusely, makes an appearance. And then it all comes together in a wonderful wall of sound.
Darkover is my favourite track, starting off with very atmospheric, mood setting guitar noises and a great tribal sounding drums. The bass guitar enters and is a sign that something is about too happen as the guitar morphs into a more melodic , more powerful state. Until finally the song opens up to you like a budding flower, but it has sucked you in completely. And then comes the voice.I just can not fault this song..it is fantastic!
Caresses draws maps II is a mournful, slow and moody track.Carried essentially by a accoustic guitar and the vocals.Beautiful.
A great solid album from a very talented band!

Ex-Voto - Doloroso

Ex-Voto's life spans many years and they are also the veterans of numerous compilations, also releasing the powerful "Anno Domini" in 1997 and "The Light of Day" a few years ago. With Doloroso, we see them at their tightest and most powerful.Seventeen songs with out filler comprimises.
Starting of with the sinister Seven Sisters, a lovely keyboard intro that leads into the traditional gothic rock guitar/bass arrangement soon followed by the baritone voice. But this is not surprising given their life span, and in a way it is rather refreshing to hear more of the traditional late 80's sounding gothik rock emerging again.
This is followed by the powerful "Spiritual Lies".The tracks don't let down the pace and steam rolls forth until we get to the perhaps, a rather surprising little number!
She Got it Big sounds a little dodgy as a title but it is utterly rock!A great example of just what this band has to offer.
Never seeming to slow down the pace stays steady and strong.Incorporating gritty realism lyrically and refraining from cheesy metaphors.Something almost everyone can relate to, that and a sense of these guys being sincere in what sinfg about.
This is a great release that will please fans of old but, I am sure, gather new ones to the fold, those who like sinister, dark and above all real gothik rock music!

Scream Silence - Aphelia

Making their entry onto the gothik stage in 1998, Scream Silence from Berlin, has up until this point released album after album of what can be described as top quality music. Where once they seemd to fill only the emptiness that was left when Dreadful Shadows decided to call it a day, they have grown and matured to , in their own right, possibly one of the most important gothik rock bands in the scene today. With a completely unique style and what must be one of the most emotional and unique voices I have ever heard.
Aphelia, is another tremdendous release that firmly cements their status in the scene today. An album so filled with astonishing beautiful music that it is practically impossible to select a single track above another. An album that makes me proud to be a goth again because of the standard of this music!
My Eyes is the first track and starting off a beautiful atmospheric and meloncholy drenched piano. The solemn baritone voice lingering over the music.Until the chorus apporaches with a full blast, stamping itself into your brain, that it has arrived in full glory. The voices flying up to a range so in contrast with the initial entry but so beautiful that it feels like (as someone special told me) they rip your guts out, twists it around in a few knots and finally decide to stamp it. Leaving you in a complete state!
Harvest immediately builds on this but with a faster tempo this is pure gothik rock.A truly great song that will certainly be played on many dance floors.
Song after song the journey continues, Kerosene is another amazing song. But I might as well list every song on the album and write the same thing over and over again.
This is a great release, one that will take you on a journey
One that will fill you with emotion.
And one that will make you proud that you listen to gothik rock music again!
I could not recommend this highly enough!

Fangs on Fur - Fangs on Fur

Interesting band this, more and more so if you start reading what they have to say, but ridiculously so, when you read what they have to say about themselves! Evidently they are about having fun, rocking hard and both in equal measures.
But then moving on to the music there is not much to fault them with. Reminding me of New Days Delay they have the same energy, same feel and atmosphere.
Fangs on Fur is the first track and is just a great anthem-like song. Starting of with syncopated drums and bass, joined shortly by the very melodic guitars the song starts rocking in full force when the voice kicks in - sometimes melodic but mostly an edgy manic sound in the voice. I really like this track a lot!
Cigarette continues where the first tracks left off. The same melodic guitars, the same edgy voice, the same rocking music. F-Boy F-Girl is far more punk and I can almost hear the Toy Dolls in this.
I must confess that from theis most unusual band comes a rather unusual offering that will strike a chord with many people that are into deathrock.
A great promo and I really am looking forward to them releasaing an album!

Pretentious,Moi? - Demo 2007

Some time ago Manuskript released an EP called I can't believe it's not Goth, well how wrong this would be if it was the title of the promo from Pretentious , Moi. But why use this comparison you ask, because the man behind Prentious , Moi is also in Manuskript. And at times there is a faint reminder of that fact, but mostly you are dealt with an incredibly good offering.
Having heard Malina, as most of you probably have by now,I can say that it is but a taste of things to come.
WitchHouse starts off with some keyboard wizardry things twirling about. And drums that wants to almost sounds a bit techno-ish!And while this might sound like a recipe for disaster, it is saved by the guitar that sneaks it way into the mix.And very soon the intro scare is lost on you the voice makes it's first appearance.A very good chorus follows the verses, and this is a reoccuring aspect of the band.
Now and Again starts off with a great guitar riff, same great voice.Very emotional track this. Building up to a great chorus Living Dead and Undecided is again more rock then the previous mentioned tracks.Another great guiatr riff, solid drums and bass guitar. And by now the familiar great chorus.I must confess that this really does not sound like a UK band to me but definately more german, similiar to Behind the Scenes.
This is a great promo and I really can not wait for the album! Excellent!

The Trespass - Symptoms of Reality

Born in June 2001, fortunately so, from the mutual impulse of brothers ( twins I may add) Vince and Benjamin Cousin. Originally starting out as a five piece with standard rock setup of vocalist, bass, guitarist, keyboardist and drummer. This formation has gone through several mutations but thankfully the core two has always remained the same.
Musically it seems inspired by the cold wave of the eighties, alternative rock and some progressive rock of the seventies culminating in a delicious mix of music that feels almost uncomfortably cold and dark but also seems to hold out a light as if it promises a last little hope and light.
Comedown starts with melancholy keyboards, a bass that seems to be as lost as the voice that soon joins in this rather sombre affair. Put soon the drums and bass find each other rhythmically and a guitar makes it presence known , but in the same time adding to the drama that unfolds. The voice escalating in its hopelessness. And by this I mean it in the bestest possible way as this track is just damn brilliant.I love it!
Mindshriek continues the coldwave with a more prominent bass and drums arrangement.Very convincing vocals!
Chemical Trails is a slightly more of rock affair starting of with strong guitars. However this does get subdued in the verse but re-emerges in the chorus.Another strong track. The Fading Flower is certainly one of my favourites on thsi album.Starting with a great rhythm, great vocals.A very good arrangement and well structured song. Great Chorus.Something about this track has just sunk its claws in me!
In Decay.../To the seventh sky (ending) is a more subdued, again melancolic track.Beautiful though.Starting with the piano and joined by the accoustic guitar. But surprise , surprise it changes (well actually if you view the next tracks as part of it) and I am reminded of Russian polka music! as it builds up into a frenzied crescendo. Interesting!
Ashes Like Snow is another brilliant track and showcases again just what a great band this is!
What a wonderful album this is!
Certainly Recommended!

Ataraxia - Kremasta Nera

Archaic mantras, ritual movements and lunar elegies, whisperingss of magic spells and eastern litanies, all this within Kremasta Nera.Ataraxia's latest offering, forging together tribal rhythms and dark ceremonies inspired by the magic of natural symphonies. This album is inspired by the lights and shadows of an extinguished civilization, realised through a mixture of acoustic sounds, strings, electronic and eastern percussions and beautiful evocative vocals.
True to the well known and credited style of Ataraxia, delivering everything you would have hoped to expect from the band. This records truly carries you away into another world, where ritual is an everyday occurance and the gods are closer to man. Opeining with The song of Axieros, it immediately sets the ritual atmosphere, the living shadows and heavy incense.
The Nine Rituals is a lovely tribal affair,The percussions is very rhythmic, accompanied with an accoustic guitar and lovely vocals. One of the livelier tracks on the album...but then Ataraxia is not entirely known for lively tracks. But this is a very nice track!
Kremasta Nera follows this, a slow track with beautiful guitar and instrumentation.Very emotional vocals.Truly an offering to the gods. This music just speaks with volumes.
Ochram is also a lovely track, more eastern in flavour.Again the rhythmic tribal percussion and the instrumentation again is fantastic. One really can fault the music . I really enjoy the eastern sound scapes created on this track.
Certainly Ataraxia's music is not for everyone. But one has to give credit where iot is due, and they certainly deserve it with this album. The music remains truthful to the concept.Beautiful, evocative, emotional and ritualistic. Klethra is just another fine example of how well they have succeeded in this.It transports you instantly to their world.
Beautiful guitar melodies through out makes this a very enjoyable album. With solid tribal percussions and the emotional vocals.
A delightful album!
