ATARAXIA
Paris Spleen
Label: Cold Meat Industry
Using the writings of Charles Baudelaire as a source of inspiration, "Paris Spleen" is a re-creation of the early twentieth century Parisian cabarets macabres, traveling carnivals, and circuses.Despite the fine guitar work, Ataraxia sheds its medieval folk music persona and teamed up with theatre company CircuZ KumP and a Madame Bistouri, who is responsible for “vocal and sharp surgical instruments”.
Atmosphere and great compositions are everything on this CD and, being that this is not solely the effort of Ataraxia, the theatrics and musical accompaniment of CircuZ KumP never left a dull moment.
Baudelaire "Paris Spleen" is the perfect literary origin and lyrical inspiration for this project, as the music matched perfectly Baudelaire’s words and unsettling beauty. This CD easily could have been highlights from an operetta, with instrumentation ranging from piano, strings, and bagpipes to trombone, accordion, and barking dogs.
A moveable feast of strong liquor, sweat, and sex, with a glimmering dagger never out of reach, yes, madame and monsieur, just beyond this curtain lies the entrance to Hell!
