Ataraxia has been a prominent name in the ethereal/folk scene
for many years, with distinguishing features such as the classical
guitarplay of Vittorio Vandelli, the atmospherical keyboard-melodies
of Giovanni Pagliari and of course the striking classical
sound of the voice of Francesca Nicoli. Ataraxia always succeeds
in creating an intense sound in the atmosphere of the theme
of the album. "Historiae" and "Sueños" were good examples
in the past, with "Historiae" created in a convincing medieval
setting, while in "Sueños" the classical Spanish influences
are obvious, particularly in Vittorio's guitarplay.
With Arcana Eco Ataraxia again succeeds in delivering a good
album in the tradition of their previous work. However, of
the seven songs, three are new editions of previously released
songs. Francesca Nicoli says, in the interview which is featured
in the book that accompanies the album, that the songs on
Arcana Eco should present an overview of the various styles
that have influenced Ataraxia over the years. However, there
does seem to be a similarity in theme in the chosen songs.
In each of the songs one or more of the elements plays an
important role.
The songs are varried and have an intense sound. The style
of the songs makes me mostly think of "Lost Atlantis", more
so than for example of "Historiae" or "Sueños"; dreamy, neo-classical
songs with in each song an important role for the voice of
Francesca. As an album it's better than "Lost Atlantis", which
had a few weak spots.
Ataraxia once more delivers with Arcana Eco a fascinating,
atmospherical album and shows that it has grown to be a mature
band. For fans of Ataraxia this album is a must-have.
